Your guide: Rachel WeissInstructional designer · EM Designs
What do I need?
- Claude Code, signed in. It comes with a paid Claude plan. Setup: Anthropic's getting-started guide.
- The kit from this page.
- Later, for the SCORM part: your own web host and your own LMS or SCORM Cloud account. They are yours, not part of the kit.
No plan yet? Read through the steps now and try them later. Nothing here expires.
What do I do with the kit?
Ten steps. Claude guides you through them with EMMA: Explore, Model, Modify, Actualize. Each step ends with what you should now see.
-
Unzip the kit.
Windows: right-click the zip and choose Extract All. Mac: double-click it.
Work in the unzipped folder, not inside the zip.
You should now see a folder named after the zip,
claude-code-september-29-starter-kit, withSTART-HERE.mdright inside it. That folder is your kit. See a folder calledkitinside it instead? That's an older download. Download the kit again. -
Open your kit folder in Claude Code.
Desktop app: in the Code tab, choose the folder you unzipped (the plain folder, not the zip) as your project folder.
Terminal: open a terminal in the folder you unzipped (Windows: right-click inside it, Open in Terminal. Mac: Control-click the folder, New Terminal at Folder). Type
claudeand press Enter. If it asks whether to trust the folder, say yes. Can't find the folder button? Type this to Claude:
Help me open my kit folder. You should now see Claude Code open and waiting for your first message.
-
Start the guide.
Explore codebaseYou should now see "EMMA STAGE 1 of 4: EXPLORE" and a request to open the brand preview.
-
Explore the ingredients.
Open
samples/brand-kit/preview.htmlby double-clicking it. Tell Claude what you notice, in your own words. For example:I see a pink and navy palette, the Meridian Works logo, and a set of little icons.Claude then asks you to find one rule in the meeting notes, and shows you the starter recipe in
skill-starter/scenario. Short on time? You can say:Got it, that's the recipe. For time, let's skip the rest of the tour and move on to planning my skill. You should now see "EMMA STAGE 2 of 4: MODEL" and Claude asking to read the files.
-
Agree on the plan.
Yes, go ahead. You should now see a five-line plan in the chat: job, sources, brand, output and checks.
-
Make your skill.
Yes, that matches. Let's make the skill. Call it branded-practice, for any branded decision scenario.Claude shows "EMMA STAGE 3 of 4: MODIFY", copies the starter into
.claude/skills/branded-practiceand suggests a brand rule. Say yes:Yes, add it.You should now see Claude telling you your skill is complete. Type
/in the message box and branded-practice is in the list. Not in the list? Close Claude Code and open it again in your kit folder, then type: I made my skill; continue with Modify.
-
Build the office game from the sample documents.
Use my branded-practice skill with sources samples/topic-shift-swaps/ and brand samples/brand-kit/. Write a new result to activity/lineup-shift-swaps/.This takes about three minutes. Let it work.
You should now see Claude say the game is built and the checks passed. Double-click
activity/lineup-shift-swaps/index.html. Five coworkers call you over, one at a time. Pick a wrong answer once, and Lena, the shift lead, walks over and explains the rule. Then tell Claude what you saw.Build stuck?
samples/scenario-example/index.htmlis a finished game made the same way, from the same documents. -
Prove the skill is reusable.
Claude offers to change the recipe, not the game: the welcome line will start with "Ready for the next shift?" Say yes. It runs your skill again into a new folder,
activity/lineup-shift-swaps-reuse.You should now see a second game whose welcome line starts with "Ready for the next shift?" Same brand, same five calls. One recipe, two results. Tell Claude you see it, and it moves on.
-
Check it and meet the SCORM folder.
Claude asks you to play the new game once: one right call, one wrong call, the score. Then it opens the
scormfolder with you.You should now see "EMMA STAGE 4 of 4: ACTUALIZE" and a plain explanation: the SCORM zip is a small launcher, and the game lives on the web.
-
Put it online and in your LMS, when you're ready.
Claude walks you through it. Sign in to a free Netlify account, put your game folder online, and give Claude the address. Claude makes your SCORM zip. Upload the zip to your LMS, or a free SCORM Cloud trial, and launch it. Then Claude changes the welcome line. You drag the folder onto the same Netlify site again, and launch again to see the change. The next section has the same steps in writing.
You should now see your game launch from your LMS, and a later change show up without a new upload.
How does the SCORM part work?
The LMS opens the zip. The zip opens the game. The game lives online.
So you can change the game without touching the LMS.
Where is my SCORM folder?
In your kit: activity, then your game's folder, then scorm. For tonight's game that's activity/lineup-shift-swaps/scorm.
Inside are imsmanifest.xml, index.html and config.js. That's the launcher. zip.ps1 builds the zip, and config.local.js is only for practice.
-
Put your game folder online.
Upload the whole game folder (for example
activity/lineup-shift-swaps) to a web host you control. You need a steady address that starts withhttps://.A free way: Netlify. Sign up at netlify.com (it has a free plan). Then go to app.netlify.com/drop and drag your game folder (the one with
index.htmlright inside it) onto the page. You get an address likehttps://something.netlify.app. Your game's full address is that, plus/index.html. Anyone with the address can open it, so only upload content you're allowed to share. You should now see the game play when you open its address in your browser.
-
Put your address in
config.js.Open
scorm/config.jsin a text editor. On Windows, right-click it and choose Open with, then Notepad. Don't double-click it: Windows might try to run it. On a Mac, Control-click it and choose Open With, then TextEdit. On the last line, replace everything between the two quote marks with your game's full address, includingindex.html. Keep the quote marks. It should look like this:window.COURSE_URL = "https://your-host.example/lineup-shift-swaps/index.html";It must start with https. It must never change after you upload the zip.
You should now see your own address in that line, and nothing else changed.
-
Make the zip.
Ask Claude:
Build the SCORM zip for activity/lineup-shift-swaps. I've put my https address in scorm/config.js.On Windows you can also run
zip.ps1yourself from thescormfolder:powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\zip.ps1. On a Mac, ask Claude. You should now see
lineup-shift-swaps-scorm.zipin thescormfolder. Keep a copy of it. -
Try it free in SCORM Cloud.
SCORM Cloud has a free trial with no time limit: up to 3 courses and 10 learner registrations (checked September 29, 2026). Import your zip, then click Launch.
You should now see your game open in a new window. Play it to the end, then check that completion and score were recorded.
-
Update the game online. Keep the same zip.
Change the game (for example, ask Claude to change the welcome line in
scenario.js). Upload the changed files to the same address. Don't touch the zip in the LMS.On Netlify: open your project, choose Deploys, and drag the whole game folder again (not only the changed file) onto the drop zone at the bottom of that page. The address stays the same.
You should now see the change when you launch the course again. Same zip, same LMS record, new game.
Test again after every change: play it, then check completion and score. Try it in your own LMS too. LMSs differ, and a change to the launcher itself still needs a new upload.
What did people ask?
- Do I need SCORM?
- No. The game is a web page. Share the link, or add it to your LMS as a web link. Use SCORM when you want completion and score in your LMS.
- How do I open my folder in the desktop app?
- In the Code tab, choose the project folder and pick the folder you unzipped. Stuck? Type to Claude: "Help me open my kit folder."
- Which model should I use?
- I use Opus. A smaller model works too, because the skill already holds the instructions.
- Is it safe to install skills from GitHub?
- Only from people you trust. First ask Claude: "Read this skill and tell me what it does, which files it changes, and whether it goes online." Then decide.
- Where does the game really live?
- Anywhere that gives you a steady https address you control. In the workshop, my laptop stood in for that.
- What's the strip at the bottom of the LMS window?
- The launcher's status line. It shows the game is connected to the LMS.
- Does the LMS get the score?
- In rehearsal, SCORM Cloud recorded completed, passed, the score and each of the five answers. Test it in your own LMS too.
- Can I use my own brand?
- Yes. Make a folder like
samples/brand-kitwith your colors, logo and voice, and point the skill at it. - What if my documents don't answer a question?
- The skill is told to stop and ask, not make up a rule. Still check every answer against your documents.
- Can I use my own work documents?
- Yes, once you've taken out anything personal, confidential or client-restricted, unless you have permission to use it with your tools.
What do these words mean?
- Skill
- A folder of instructions Claude can reuse. Yours lives in
.claude/skills/branded-practice. Point it at new documents next month and it follows the same recipe. - Activity
- One result the skill makes, like
activity/lineup-shift-swaps. Change the activity and you change one game. Change the skill and you change every game it makes next. - EMMA
- Explore, Model, Modify, Actualize. Look at what you have, agree on a small plan, make and test it, then get it ready for real use.
- CLAUDE.md
- The guide file in your kit. It tells Claude how to walk you through, one step at a time.
- LMS
- Learning management system. Where your learners find their courses.
- SCORM
- A standard package an LMS knows how to open. Here it's a tiny launcher that points to your game online.
- https address
- A secure web address, like
https://your-host.example/.... LMSs block plain http inside their courses.
